I often use Split View while working, and doing so automatically extends the top bezel over the notch. Most would happily trade a half-inch of thickness for some extra performance. The side profile is thicker and rounder. And as some keen Apple historians have pointed out, it pays homage to an Apple laptop from 20 years ago, the Titanium PowerBook G4.
There are a number of reasons for the thicker chassis, including having room for additional ports and better thermals. The inch is just 0. Importantly, the inch MacBook Pro that I reviewed grew in size over the previous, Intel-powered generation, which was 0. While it took entirely too long to get here, Apple has arrived at what I believe is the best possible port selection. You still get three Thunderbolt 4 ports for all the high-powered docking you could need.
First off, charging will primarily happen through the MagSafe 3 power adapter on the left side. What a glorious return! It also feels like it has a stronger magnetic grip, and it is, of course, thinner. It even has a fancy braided cord, which is beautiful. The SD card slot in particular feels like a must. So many of the buyers of the MacBook Pro will be transferring files from a camera to a laptop. The MacBook Pro marks the most significant evolution in display technology for the line since That shows just how far ahead of the game Apple was back then, but the competition has clearly caught up.
The MacBook Pro takes back the crown, but not in ways that you might expect. That represents an increase in pixel density from pixels per inch ppi to ppi. In terms of black levels, the difference between this and OLED is nearly indistinguishable. Both blow traditional LED out of the water and provide a much larger depth of quality.
And when it comes to supported content, it looks incredible. Very few people are buying a laptop just to watch HDR movies on. Fair enough. But the panel is worthy of praise in and of itself, especially since it now includes a Hz ProMotion refresh rate. If you still think high refresh rates are only noticeable or advantageous for gaming laptops, just try toggling off ProMotion and locking the screen at 60Hz.
Animations and scrolling feel so much smoother. Heck, even the reduced ghosting of the cursor improves the overall look and feel of the system. Apple has brought updates to both the webcam and speakers this time around. This upgrade is significant, resulting in a much crisper, smoother feed for your laptop-driven video calls.
Webcams have never been so important, and laptop manufacturers are finally starting to figure that out. It really puts the MacBook Pro in its own league. Now, there were times where I felt the smoothing effects were a little too strong or the color balance a bit too warm.
The MacBook Pro maintains its reputation as offering the best audio experience on any laptop. Apple upped the ante this time around with an upgraded six-speaker sound system. The tweeters are both larger, and Apple says the woofers now go a half octave deeper. The bass thumps harder and the stereo separation feels wider than ever.
The MacBook Pro actually offers an enjoyable set of speakers to listen to music on. But more than that, chances are these sound better than your average Bluetooth speaker or computer speakers. Like the webcam and speakers, the keyboard and touchpad are, without a doubt, the best you can find on a laptop. No doubt in my mind. The keyboard features nice springy keys with a cozy 1. The Touch Bar is, of course, the big change to the keyboard in the model.
The Touch Bar never lived up to its promise , nor received the support it needed to grow into something more useful. The function row is back, but somehow improved. Well, Apple did it by increasing the size. I love these changes. In making these keys larger, though, Apple has removed a few important function keys, namely the backlighting brightness and Launchpad keys. I would have preferred a slightly smaller Escape key to make room for brightness control for keyboard backlighting, but everyone is going to have their own opinion about this.
It remains vast and expansive, with plenty of space for long swipe and multi-finger gestures. The Force Touch Trackpad remains a standout, simulating the feeling of a click using only a small motorized haptic feedback engine. That sounds like a lot, but the inch MacBook Pro has always been expensive. The sweet spot for you will depend on what exactly your needs are. Somewhere in between is likely where you want to be, regardless of whether you end up choosing the M1 Max or M1 Pro.
You should also be aware that the starting configuration of the inch M1 Pro uses just an 8-core processor. The lines get blurry for that lower-end MacBook Pro, which is bound to be the most popular of the bunch, but keep in mind that this is first and foremost a laptop made for professional creatives. And for those that actually need a pro laptop, you just found your ultimate tool.
Thanks to the vastly improved performance of the M1 Pro and M1 Max, these MacBook Pros can actually be used as professional machines for content creators. That means photo editors, color graders, website designers, programmers, video editors, 3D modelers, game designers, music producers, and more. If you want to do more than just dabble in these creative fields, dropping the cash on one of these new MacBook Pros is going to pay off.
As I get my hands on more configurations of these new MacBook Pros, I intend to make some more precise comparisons between the different models, specifically between the M1 Pro and M1 Max. For now, though, my review unit was the inch model with the M1 Pro.
Both of these chips have an extra two CPU cores for a total of 10 over the standard M1 featured in the inch MacBook Pro and Air , and that lends a helping hand in multi-core processing. Taking a look at how it scored in synthetic benchmarks, you can clearly see that higher core count flex its muscles. Handbrake is another CPU-bound application I tested the machine on, and it had a similar performance gain over the M1. In Messages, it becomes the Emoji Bar, which is objectively the best thing ever.
You can scrub through your timeline in Final Cut, or swipe through photo albums in Photos. There's no new functionality here, just easier and more obvious access to common stuff. Technically, the Touch Bar works brilliantly. It's fast and smooth and responsive. The textured glass feels great, and looks fantastic. Using my fingerprint on the Touch ID reader to log in and to pay for stuff is the best. But the implementation feels unfinished. With no function keys, shortcuts for adjusting brightness and controlling music are hidden in a tiny menu to the right of the Touch Bar.
Three are accessible at a tap: mute, volume, and screen brightness. What madman needs brightness controls that much? Pausing or playing music—something I do about 45, times daily—requires carefully tapping on the tiny left arrow, waiting a moment for the menu to expand, then finding and pressing the button.
But the Touch Bar exists precisely to make these small, repetitive tasks easier. And too often, it just doesn't have the option or button I'm looking for. The screen changes constantly, moving things around to the point where I can't find anything. I'd like to see Apple open the Touch Bar so users can customize it.
Then it could be everything I want it to be, because I could make it so. Right now, I'm subject to Apple's best guess about what I want. It has a 2. Most benchmarks show that it's faster than the previous Pro without being preposterously so. Now, if you don't know or care what any of that means, it's probably way more computer than you need. So is the inch MacBook, honestly. That's probably a better machine, if you don't need more than a browser. If you're a spec-hungry power-user, you might be underwhelmed.
In my experience, there's plenty of power here. My workflow isn't everyone's, but I can run Photoshop, Photos, 25 browser tabs, Slack which is weirdly power-hungry at times , and a handful of other apps, no sweat. It's not enough for high-end gaming, or really intensive video editing, but it's more than enough for everyone else. But the ports.
I can conclusively say The Dongle Life sucks. It's great that my laptop is smaller and lighter, but hunting through my bag for the tiny adapter to plug in my hard drive, which is different from the one I need for my monitor, which won't work to plug in my phone, is infuriating exercise.
Lots of people don't connect things to their laptops, but those people aren't the people who need a MacBook Pro. Apple's response, as with so many things, is: We know better than you do, so give it a minute. USB-C is here, or at least coming quickly, and you need to get on board. If you don't buy a USB-C computer now because you don't want adapters, you'll be buying adapters in a couple years to connect your new stuff to your legacy computer. Everyone complains, but figures it out.
There's no better way to kickstart the ecosystem than to put the new world order in front of the pros who will build it. Do you desperately need a new laptop right this second? If not, wait. Run your current and probably still excellent machine into the ground, then buy a new one. In a year or two USB-C accessories will be everywhere, developers will have figured out what the Touch Bar is good for, and Apple may even give the Pro spec bump.
Our test model for the following article was purchased in Apple's online store no press sample. Change log. Thinner, lighter, and also available in "Space Gray" — this is how the new MacBook Pro case can be characterized. You still get the excellent impression of the unibody aluminum case, which is familiar from the previous models and the rest of Apple's lineup.
Stability, tactile feel and design are on the highest level. The new and particularly thin hinge is subjectively not all that different from the old one. The speakers are now located next to the keyboard and the new touchpad is much bigger. Apple also reworked the keyboard and it is very similar to the small inch MacBook.
The illuminated Apple logo on the lid was removed to enable a thinner case and is now just as glossy as on the inch model. The bottom panel is still secured with proprietary Pentalobe screws. Compared to the other models from Apple's lineup, the new Apple MacBook Pro has much more compact dimensions, both compared to the direct predecessor as well as the MacBook Air At up to 17 millimeters at its thickest spot, the latter is even 2 millimeters thicker than the new Pro.
The new inch model will tip the scale at about grams and therefore grams more than its inch counterpart, but it will be just one millimeter thicker. The two Thunderbolt ports are, however, very versatile, at least when you have the corresponding expensive adapter. The more expensive models have 4 ports the two ports on the right side of the inch model are only half-speed.
The integrated iSight webcam takes pictures with a resolution of x The colors are okay, but both the resolution as well as the noise behavior are very outdated. All details disappear in low-light situations and the results are not even very convincing in daylight. There has not been an improvement in this department for years now. It is unfortunate, especially since Apple's iPhones show what is currently possible. However, our WLAN test does not confirm any suspicions that the performance is now reduced.
The excellent performance of the previous model in this case the model is not reached by the new MBP, but it is still faster than the fastest Windows notebook, so this is criticism on a very high level. Apple probably equipped the entry-level system with a lower-spec WLAN card, the Touch Bar models should perform even better. We did notice some connectivity problems when we used a 2. We often noticed it with the Kensington Docking Station, for example. The phenomenon is unfortunately not reproducible all the time and we did not have any issues while running Windows 10 in the beginning, either one time over the course of the review.
We therefore hope this is a software problem, which will hopefully be fixed in the near future. The bottom panel is secured by Pentalobe screws and grants pretty easy access to the components when you have the corresponding screw driver. However, cleaning the fans is unfortunately the only thing you can do, maybe also replace the proprietary SSD currently not yet available as a single part. The previous model still had a socketed WLAN card, but it is now soldered as well. A full overview about the internal design is provided by the iFixit teardown of the MacBook Pro 13, which is also the source of the following two pictures.
Apple grants a 1-year warranty for its notebooks, which can be extended to 3 years for a comparatively high price including phone support though — also for software. Both stations were recognized and worked immediately with macOS as well as Windows The LAN port of the Anker was only recognized at the second Thunderbolt port, but worked without problems after that.
The new MacBooks use the second generation of the chiclet keyboard, which was introduced with the inch MacBook. The shallow travel will once again be a shock when you use it for the first time. The very even stroke does leave a positive impression though. This second generation of Apple's own Butterfly mechanism was noticeably improved compared to the inch MacBook, but you still have to get used to the typing experience.
After this has happened, the switch back to the old MacBook pro is actually pretty difficult, because we now found it to be rather spongy in comparison. We did not notice any differences in typing speed compared to the previous MacBook Pro models, and quick inputs without typos were no problem even in the first session. The typing noise will depend heavily on your usage scenario.
It is slightly louder compared to the old model with ten fingers, but we do not consider it to be disturbing even in quiet environments. If you type forcefully with just two fingers though, the noise will be much louder. You can see a comparison in the video below this section. Because of the shallow travel, the level keyboard illumination of the individual keys is well implemented into the case and it will not dazzle. The glass trackpad of the new MacBook Pro models is much bigger compared to the previous models, but the technology is otherwise identical.
It is still the reference for a touchpad, even though Windows devices like the Surface 4 Pro start to close the gap. Thanks to the taptic engine, tactile clicks are identical all over the surface and it is also possible to trigger a firmer "Force Press". Both systems work so well that you do not want to go back to a conventional touchpad with rocker switches.
The software support of the trackpad in macOS is also still unrivaled. The palm rejection worked well, but it is also necessary due to the larger surface, because you will often put a finger or two on the touchpad. Accidental cursor movements were very rare when we used the keyboard. Apple does not change its Retina display and still uses a Contrary to the previous model, however, is the default scaling to x instead of x Possible alternatives are x as well as x Apple advertises a luminance of nits in the spec sheet, and we can confirm the results in our measurements.
The actual results are even better at more than nits in the center. There is a slight drop towards the edges, but the brightness distribution is still very good at 89 percent. You can also use the full luminance on battery power. The minimum brightness is very low at 6. Thanks to the high maximum luminance, the black value of 0. Our comparison shows that the new Apple MacBook Pro 13 performs very well. All the siblings from Apple, but also important rivals are clearly beaten in terms of luminance.
The black value is a bit higher compared to the predecessor and the other comparison devices, but this is compensated by the contrast ratio. Our initial evaluation of the color accuracy and the grayscale performance of the display reveals accurate results ex-works. We can measure a DeltaE of 2 max.
If PWM was detected, an average of minimum: 5 - maximum: Hz was measured. Thanks to the used IPS technology, the Retina display retains a balanced color reproduction even from extreme angles. With the specifications and the help of various tools, we can clearly identify the Intel Core iU. The CPU is clocked between 2.
Intel's Kaby Lake did not fit into Apple's schedule, because the new processors are only available for a couple of weeks now. If you do not want to waive the Kaby Lake advantages , you will have to wait for new Apple devices in about a year. Let's have a look at the CPU performance, and there does not seem to be a big difference compared to the predecessor with the iU processor.
This chip has a slightly higher clock between 2. The storage solution is probably the fastest drive Apple used for its laptops so far. Apple uses memory chips from SanDisk in combination with its own controller. The drive is attached to the logic board, but Apple does use a proprietary standard, so replacing the drive by yourself is pretty much impossible. The highlight in the benchmarks is the extremely high sequential transfer rate.
The drive is, however, beaten in the 4K tests and the access times are also a bit higher compared to the rivals. The graphics adapter of the small MacBook Pro 13 is the integrated Intel Iris Graphics see for more details and benchmarks. It has 48 EUs running at up to MHz. We check the graphics performance of the integrated chip with Windows 10 via Bootcamp , because we have more comparison devices.
Compared to dedicated graphics cards, the Intel is sitting between the GeForce M and M in the synthetic benchmarks. The challenging title Witcher 3 is not really playable even with low details, but the new Apple MacBook Pro 13 can beat numerous comparable or even better equipped notebooks. The Iris is generally no gaming GPU. Many modern titles cannot be played and there are also some graphics errors right now.
The GPU does at least support beta drivers and Intel is obviously trying to launch new updates faster than before. The performance once again falls behind the M and even the slow M is sometimes faster. Quite the contrary: We saw the highest scores after a couple of runs in both benchmarks. However, the fluctuations in the Unigine Valley benchmark 8.
Our initial impression with the test model is pretty typical for devices from Apple: You cannot hear the fan Touch Bar model: two fans with office workloads. You will only hear a quiet increase of the fan speed unter sustained workloads. But then it happens: The fan of our test model starts to rattle and is very sensitive to position changes of the notebook. We have to assume a defect of our test model.
But the fan is subjectively a bit more unpleasant than the old model as well, even without the rattling. While you could only hear a murmur so far, you can now also hear a slightly high-pitched sound. The single fan steadily increases its speed over the one-hour test period according to the istat tool. The latter also hows that the fan is deactivated while idling, while the old MacBook models had slowly running fans that were always active.
Our test therefore starts with the ambient noise of The MacBook is basically silent for the first couple of minutes and reached up to rpm and After that, we noticed a linear increase to We also selected the maximum fan speed at rpm manually via istat and measured up to However, we never reached the maximum fan speed with any of our reviewed Macs. The noise characteristics differs a lot from the previous model.
The new and flatter fan has three peaks at Hz, Hz and pretty high-pitched Hz. The previously mentioned and recorded rattling was not audible anymore in this test, maybe it was stopped by the movements in the video. Sustained workloads will result in a perceptible and measurable warming of the MacBook Pro 13, especially in the rear area where the logic board as well as the core components are located.
The previous MBP shows a very similar temperature development, but gets a bit warmer at the top. Apple was able to distribute the heat more across the chassis compared to the predecessor. After Apple's ultra-compact MacBook 12 surprised us with a new reference for notebook sound, we had pretty high expectations for the new Apple MacBook Pro After our measurements, we can say that Apple delivers the expected quality.
The speaker characteristics are very similar to the MacBook 12, the small differences in terms of volume should be a result of the different positions of the speakers in relation to the fixed position of our measuring microphone. The curve is even more linear when we move the microphone from our default position towards the position of the user's head. All in all, the new Apple MacBook Pro 13 delivers sufficient sound pressure in the low tone area and an almost perfectly linear characteristic all the way up to the super-high tones.
A maximum volume of We reach the best result of 0. A glowing logo on your lid? That startup chime that wakes everybody around you when you thought you'd muted your Mac? For better or worse, they're all gone. So, who might want to buy this new inch MacBook Pro? Anybody considering an upgrade from a MacBook Air , or the older inch MacBook Pro to the equivalent model, perhaps has an easier decision to make than more cautious last-generation inch MacBook Pro owners looking to make the leap.
Both models can be further configured with faster processors, additional memory and beefier graphics cards for extra cost. One of the brightest points about the new MacBook Pro quite literally is its new Retina display. With a pixel-resolution of 2, x 1,, it's not the most pixel-packed display out there.
In fact, the resolution is the same as the previous inch MacBook Pro. However, like Apple's Retina 5K iMac , it has received a vibrancy boost and now supports the P3 color space. That's a boon for photographers who shoot in RAW format and need to view files shot in the widest possible color gamut available.
In one sense, that means that unless you're a pro who shoots on the regular, you don't need the new display in your life. But, even so, there is a tangible difference between the screen quality on this year's inch MacBook and the last-gen model. It's simply brighter, more color saturated and pleasing to the eyes. Even wallpapers take on a new vibrancy, and once you've clasped eyes on it, it's hard to go back. From Retina displays to Force Touch trackpads, new features provide talking points for successive generations of MacBooks.
It can also be used to pay for goods and services on Apple Pay-enabled websites. Opting for a strip of glass, rather than a full touchscreen, is a move that makes sense for several reasons. While laptop displays used as touchscreens can prove practical on machines running Windows 10 , which has been sculpted into a touch-friendly operating system since Windows 8, macOS is far from optimized for touch input. Moreover, pawing at the screen leaves fingerprints, and doing so for long periods of time makes your arm ache.
Interacting with the Touch Bar, on the other hand, can be done while your hands are closer to their natural resting position on the keyboard. As a result, even with the ability to interact with all 10 fingers, interaction is limited to tapping and dragging in the space the size of a tape measure.
There is, at least, a good level of customization when it comes to which icons are displayed on the Touch Bar. By delving into System Preferences, you can drag and drop system functions onto the bar in any order required for fast access. Its usefulness is going to be entirely dependent on the creativity of developers who can maximize the use of space.
After turning the MacBook on, the Touch Bar displays system icons such as brightness, volume and an escape key. In Safari, for example, a row of bookmark icons appears, allowing you to load various websites with a tap.
The New MacBook Pro is light, thin, and solid. It fits into my backpack as easily as my old MacBook Air did and is just as easy to carry around. Large trackpad is a mixed blessing: The larger size of the trackpad means that the keyboard has less space to play in. It's the same flattened. The new MacBook Pro is a terrific laptop and, like the super-skinny MacBook, a clear indication of where most of the computing world is going.
