The biggest difference between the two iPad models, for me, was never about consumption versus creation. It was time. The iPad mini was perfect for short bursts of attention: small enough to hold in one hand or use in a crowded subway, portable enough to go everywhere with me all the time.
But the larger iPad was where I found myself lost for hours, spending an entire afternoon reading a book or binge-watching an entire season of Scandal. It was bigger, brighter, higher-res, and ultimately just more immersive. The iPad mini with Retina display now has a 7.
I found myself, if not able to work comfortably, at least able to get things done in a pinch thanks to the new, free iWork apps on the device. Here again, however, the Nexus 7 puts up a remarkable fight. Four hundred seventy five thousand. The message at that event was clear: tablets are as tablets do. Android and iOS each offer hundreds of thousands of apps for smartphones, and with fewer and fewer exceptions, nearly any app anyone would want is available on both platforms.
There are dozens of other examples. Many apps that are available on Android β even Facebook and Twitter β come only in clunkier, blown-up-phone-app form. All , apps work on both iPads, at the same Retina resolution. The new model scored more than five times higher than the old in GeekBench vs. Doing everything on such a high-res screen does take its toll β the mini dropped frames and stuttered while I played Asphalt 8: Airborne, and even occasionally hiccuped while playing a high-res video.
The tablet also has a propensity for warming up during gameplay or heavy multitasking, too. It never gets worryingly hot, but my fingertips would occasionally start to sweat as I held the iPad in them. In everyday use, the iPad mini feels fast, smooth, and solid. Except when iOS 7 gets in the way, as it has a tendency to do in a variety of small but annoying ways. When you pinch with five fingers to close an app, the icons jitter and jerk into place. When you tap on the to switch from letters to numbers in the keyboard, it can take a second.
Swiping down on the screen to search your device brings out similar stutters, and even multitasking can be imprecise. And in places it just feels wrong: the huge, overgrown Siri interface, or the sharing menus that pop up in odd, hard-to-reach corners. On the iPad mini with Retina display, where there are few real problems to divert your attention, the little things start to stand out.
There is one notable exception: with brightness all the way up, longevity plummets to only about four hours. The iPad mini with Retina display is a fantastic tablet, but one that defies categorization. The difference between a 7-inch, or screen and a 7. This is exactly what you want from a tablet, as the touchscreen is the main way of interacting with it, so everything should be focused here. Once again, Apple has pulled out all of the stops, making this tablet one of the most attractive in its range.
Its full glass front looks gorgeous, whether you opt for the silver or space grey models. As usual, the aluminium unibody is fantastic, simultaneously being beautiful and giving the reassuring feeling that the iPad mini 2 is incredibly tough. The only minor difference is that this model is 0. It's a difference you'd never notice, though, and given the faster processor and better screen on show here, it's impressive that the tablet is still so thin.
When it comes to design and build quality, it's fair to say that no other tablet from any manufacturer comes close. The real beauty of the iPad mini's design is that it fits so comfortably in one hand. Although the iPad Air slimmed down a lot from the previous full-sized iPad, it's still really a two-handed device. If you primarily use the iPad on commutes or other places where two-handed operation isn't so comfortable, this is definitely the model for you.
The only thing "missing" from the tablet is the Touch ID fingerprint reader, which was launched with the iPhone 5S. When we first saw Touch ID, we thought that Apple would be keen to roll it out to all of its products, but neither the iPad mini 2 nor the iPad Air have this sensor.
In fact, it's only just appeared on the newly announced iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2, which launched in October The iPad mini 2, meanwhile, makes do with just the usual home button. A fingerprint is a nice bit of tech to have, and not just because it makes it quicker to unlock the tablet. With the launch of iOS 8. So, rather than typing your password into an app, such as Amazon's shop, you can use your fingerprint to unlock it.
This is not only more convenient, but it also means that you can pick really secure passwords, safe in the knowledge you'll only have to enter them once. While not having a fingerprint reader isn't the biggest loss, and wouldn't dissuade us from buying this tablet, it's a bit of shame that it took Apple another generation of iPad to include Touch ID.
Pushing the resolution up to 2, x 1,, Apple has quadrupled the resolution from the original iPad mini's 1, x That's quite a staggering improvement and, due to the slightly smaller screen, the iPad mini 2 has a higher pixel density than the iPad Air ppi vs ppi. Strictly speaking, we'd have to say that this resolution is probably higher than is required, going by Apple's Retina display definition.
According to this, Retina is the point at which you can no longer see individual pixels when you hold the device at a normal viewing distance. We can see why Apple went down this route, though. By keeping its iPad range with the same screen resolution or an easy scaling option from the low-res versions , it makes things simple for developers and consumers. In other words, you can rest assured that all of the apps that worked so well on the full-sized iPad will work well here.
Of course, it helps that the screen quality is so good. It's bright, contrast is fantastic and viewing angles are superb. There's little more you could possibly want from a tablet screen. The improvement over the original iPad mini's screen is incredible. Apps used to look a little blurred, but now they're clearer and sharper, making text and icons easier to see.
From the screenshot below, you can see the difference in quality. We're displaying each screenshot at the same physical size, to demonstrate how they would look if you had both iPad mini tablets side by side. On the top is the original iPad mini, while the bottom image shows the super-sharp iPad mini 2. Compared to the iPad Air, the smaller screen size here means that text and icons are smaller, but not to the point where anything is difficult to read.
Apple has picked a high-quality IPS panel, as we've come to expect, which is bright, with vibrant colours. When we put the tablets side by side, the Air's screen was plainly superior, with darker text and whiter whites. The mini's screen is still excellent, and you're unlikely to notice the difference in everyday use, but some compromises have been made to cram this many pixels into this few screen inches.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8. Compared to other small-screen tablets, such as the Nexus 7 , the iPad mini 2 has the advantage. While 7in is a typical screen size on other tablets, the aspect ratio and 7. In terms of size and resolution, while maintaining a tablet that's handheld, we have to say that Apple has got the balance bang on.
Inside is the same bit 1. However, the mini 2 is still more than fast enough to run any current title without any slowdown, so you shouldn't have any trouble playing your favourite games. Alongside the A7 sits the Apple M7 motion coprocessor, which was introduced with the iPhone 5s. This low-power part monitors the sensors on the iPad, which lets it do some pretty clever things.
For example, place the iPad flat on a desk and it knows that it's no longer moving, so there's no point hunting for Wi-Fi or mobile signals, which can help it save power. It can also detect if you move from driving to walking, which means Maps can switch its directions to suit.
With this ability built into the iPad, other apps can start to make use of the M7 and we doubt that we've seen it used to its maximum ability yet. As with the iPad mini 3, the mini 2 has a 6,mAh battery. In our video-playback battery test, the tablet lasted for 11hrs 4mins. Apple hasn't upgraded the camera in the iPad mini 2, sticking with the same 5-megapixel model as used in the iPad Air and previous iPad mini.
Considering the resolution, the camera's not too bad, but it is starting to show its age now, as shots are decidedly low-res. Compared side by side with the iPad mini, with both photos taken at the same time, the iPad mini 2 bottom image produces the slightly better shot. Colours are marginally better and there's more dynamic range.
The photo is also a little sharper throughout. In both cases, the resolution means there isn't much detail when you zoom in, although the photos are fine for sharing on YouTube. Pictures start to get much noisier in low light, and there's no flash to help illuminate things. The improved camera was shown again in our still-life photography tests.
Here, we shoot our scene in a light tent under controlled lighting, letting us compare the results from any camera or tablet that we get in for review. Under bright lighting, the iPad mini 2 does a really good job. The shot is well exposed, colours are natural and there's very little sign of noise.
As the name suggests, the Californian company has also equipped the tablet with a Retina display. This display has a resolution of x pixels and takes the gold medal for the highest pixel density of any seven-to-eight inch device. According to Apple, the new Mini also has a battery life of up to ten hours , even with its new display. But there had to be some give somewhere and the Mini had to grow a bit to fit its larger battery. In terms of storage space , customers can choose between 16, 32, 64 and GB.
Still, the competing models have no reason to quake with fear. Read the following review to find out how the Apple iPad Mini Retina does in our tests, and whether it really is a junior iPad Air. The Apple iPad Mini Retina measures x At grams 0. The larger battery does not just take up more space; it also increases the weight.
If you lay the two down next to each other, you might think the Mini is the iPad Air 's miniature twin. The Mini's unibody case is also made of aluminum and is exquisitely manufactured. The material feels wonderful in your hands, but it shows fingerprints easily. The whole front is protected by a glass plate. The slits between the glass and the aluminum case are thin and perfectly even. The oil-resistant coating Apple advertises as protecting their touchscreen from fingerprints is not any better than on their other tablet.
You will still have to use a cleaning cloth every now and then. The iPad is also very resistant to twisting. Even when we applied a fair amount of force, the device would not warp. We could not get the tablet to make any cracking or creaking sounds. The Mini also holds up well under pressure. You have to press very hard against the backside to create distortions on the screen. In summary, the iPad Mini Retina is incredibly well manufactured. The iPad Mini Retina's connectivity options mirror those of its predecessor and its big brother , and are sparse as usual.
The Lightning connector is still the tablet's central port and is essentially an enhanced USB 2. A real USB port or a microSD slot for storage expansion would certainly be nice, but Apple holds fast to their policies and continues to omit these features. The tablet is also equipped with the obligatory headphone jack. The switch integrated into the right side can be configured in the settings to function as a rotation lock or mute button. Apple installs their own iOS version 7. After the first start-up, the tablet immediately offers a new bug fix version 7.
Unfortunately, the browser bug we encountered during our WLAN test and wrote about in our iPad Air review is still an issue in the new version. The operating system on the high-resolution iPad Mini Retina received a massive visual overhaul since its previous version.
It now looks significantly more harmonious and not as bright as on the iPhones. Apple also now offers their Office apps for the tablet free of charge. The module supports the IEEE Box , the connection quality is very good.
The tablet still loads websites at a reasonable speed, though there is a noticeable delay. Unfortunately, the device does not support the new ac standard, nor is it equipped with an NFC chip. Bluetooth version 4. The latter supports a wide frequency spectrum, but it does not meet the specifications for Cat 4 LTE. Due to fact that the device has two microphones, its voice quality is very good.
The webcam 1. Also, in poor lighting situations the lens quickly reveals its limitations and generates a lot of image noise. Still, all in all the device's communication features certainly add to its appeal. The backside of the device houses an iSight camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels x pixels.
In good lighting situations, this camera is good for the occasional snapshot, but in weak light it produces a fair amount of image noise. Because it has neither an assist light nor a flash , it is impossible to take pictures in dark surroundings. The main lens records videos at p. This function works quite well, though you need a steady hand, and quick panning should be avoided. The accessories included in the iPad Mini Retina's packaging are few, as per usual.
Alongside a modular power supply with a power rating of 10 Watts, you will get a Lightning-to-USB cable that serves to charge the tablet and transfer data to a computer. And with that, we have exhausted the list. You can purchase a variety of additional accessories in the Apple Store or through a third-party supplier. Apple's standard warranty on their iPad Mini Retina only lasts twelve months. In portrait format , the QWERTY keys measure 7 x 9 mm width x height and are considerably smaller than on the tablet's big brother.
Anyone who wants to write longer texts will quickly switch into landscape format. At 11 x 12 mm, the keys are bigger, though in exchange less of the screen is visible. However, compared to the competing devices with Android or Windows, substantially more screen content remains visible in landscape format. The capacitive touchscreen recognizes up to ten fingers of input simultaneously, reacts quickly , and functions precisely.
Fingers glide easily across the glass. This is an excellent input device. As the name suggests, the high-resolution Retina display has now found its way into the Apple iPad Mini Retina. The panel has a resolution of x pixels , which corresponds to an aspect ratio of With a display diagonal measuring 7.
The iPad Mini's aspect ratio is a boon, especially when it comes to viewing photos. Also, considerably more website content remains visible in landscape format on the Mini Retina than on the Nexus 7 or the HDX 7, both of which have an aspect ratio of On the other hand, the competitors can play movies across their entire screens , whereas the Apple tablet is forced to display films with thick borders to conform to the right format. We didn't observe any screen bleeding on the iPad Mini.
At , the iPad Mini Retina's contrast is quite good. Black does not appear jet-black, but more like a dark coal color. In practice this shortcoming is not very noticeable, and the Nexus 7 1. According to the specialists at DisplayMate , the iPad Mini's color reproduction is unfortunately below average. On the other hand, its grayscale calibration is exemplary and leaves nothing to be desired. Things look different in the area of color accuracy , where almost every color deviates significantly from the target.
As a result, the colors look a little too dull. The panel's color saturation is better; only blue deviates significantly, with a dE value of Here we see clearly that not all Retina displays are created equal, even if both panels are Apple products.
The iPad Mini Retina is well suited for outdoor use. Its high brightness and rich contrast combine to lend the screen visibility even in bright surroundings. The panel's reflective surface is the only hindrance to viewing the display content in direct sunlight. However, in bright environments, the panel's reflective surface obstructs the screen's visibility at wide angles. Also, like the iPad Air, at flat angles the Mini reveals a small gap between the glass surface and the panel , where bothersome reflections develop.
In practice, however, you will only very rarely encounter this issue. Whereas Apple installed an already outdated SoC in their first iPad Mini Apple A5 , this time around they outfitted the mini tablet with their current flagship. The bit Apple A7 processor has two cores and an M7 co-processor at its command.
Both cores clock at 1. Even though the little Apple tablet clocks at a slightly lower frequency than the structurally identical CPU in the iPad Air , it certainly has its appeal. The integrated Imagination PowerVR G 's graphics performance is especially compelling and leaves some of the competition in the dust. If the iPad Mini performs the test after running for a while, it only reaches 58 fps -- a score points comparable to that of the iPhone 5S.
The GPU tends to throttle minimally , though you do not notice that at all in practice. The tablet's pure CPU performance is also remarkable. This proves that the A7 CPU works much more effectively. The Apple iPad Mini Retina delivers impressive browser performance and outclasses all the competition, regardless of platform. Subjectively, too, there is hardly anything to complain about here. Websites load quickly and are displayed correctly.
The missing Flash support is the only nuisance. The iPad Mini Retina can take on any game in Apple's app store without a problem. With its high-performance Imagination PowerVR G , the tablet is also well equipped for future releases. The precise sensors and good touchscreen perform their tasks flawlessly. At a surface temperature of up to The Nexus 7 stays cooler Under load , the Apple tablet's temperatures rise to up to Not only is this a considerably cooler maximum temperature than the iPad Air max.
The HDX 7 max. The Acer W3, on the other hand, reaches a downright smoldering maximum temperature of All in all, the iPad Mini makes a good impression here, though after an extended period under load, the graphics unit grows too hot and throttles a little , as described in the Performance section of this article. In practice, however, this drop in performance is not noticeable, though it may prove to be more of an issue for future high-end games.
The sound quality is excellent. High tones are clear, mid-tones are distinctly audible and the bass is comparatively robust. Even at maximum volume, the speakers do not crackle or distort the sound. Unfortunately, the speakers are not well positioned.
Because the two boxes are located too close to one another, the tablet does not produce a real stereo sound. If you want to play an audio file with the device resting on a table, it is better to lay it with the display side down, otherwise the sound is dulled as it collides with the surface of the table. The stereo jack 3. The iPad Mini Retina consumes between 1.
At full display brightness, the tablet uses a little more energy here. Under load , the energy consumption rate rises to up to 8. This is a little higher than the Acer W3 8. The iPad Mini's behavior in standby mode proves to be exemplary -- it needs just 0. When the device was completely shut down, we did not detect any power usage.
The Apple iPad Mini Retina is equipped with a The rest of the chassis looks otherwise identical to the original mini. Apple likes to keep its mobile designs around for at least two generations, and the mini is no exception. By no means is this a complaint however. I'm just as enamored with the high quality mini chassis as I was last year.
I think Apple nailed the size of the smaller iPad the first time around; 7. The face of the tablet is marked by an asymmetric bezel, identical to the iPad Air. Just like before, Apple does a little bit of extra work in rejecting thumbs placed on either edge of the mini to make up for the lack of side bezel to hold.
The back is a solid piece of aluminum, available in either a light silver or space dark grey finish. Just like with the iPhone, the silver model gets a white treatment on the front with a lighter chamfer while space grey comes with a black trim and gunmetal chamfered edge. Models with a cellular modem feature a plastic RF window along the top edge of the tablet just like the bigger iPad. The mini sounds pretty good although you do get better low frequency reproduction out of the larger iPad Air.
Complementing both is a dual-mic setup for background noise removal, once again identical to the iPad Air. The mini is available in the exact same configurations as the iPad Air. Gallery: iPad mini with Retina Display. So much of the experience of using a tablet is tied to the weight and distribution of said weight. The iPad Air is proof of just how true that is.
Whereas the iPad Air straddled the line between comfortable one and two handed usage, the mini finds itself squarely in one handed territory. The mini is by far the more comfortable of the two tablets to hold while lying down. The chassis is narrow enough where I can just barely get one hand around the entire thing and use it like a giant smartphone.
If I hold the mini in both hands like a smartphone I can actually type away super quickly using my thumbs. While the iPad Air is too big to hold in portrait mode and comfortably type on with my thumbs, the mini is too small to hold in landscape mode and use like a regular keyboard. For typing out long emails like I would on a notebook, the iPad Air is the better option assuming I can get to a desk or can sit down.
Apple sent an LTE model, which basically duplicated most of the functionality of my smartphone. Reading, particularly given the new Retina Display, is pretty good on the mini. I was asked to look into the comic reading experience on the mini and also came away pretty pleased. Text bubbles were definitely not as easy to read as on the iPad Air, but overall the experience was still good in most of what I read. What you do lose, you definitely make up in portability.
Like the iPad Air, the iPad mini is light enough that using any sort of case adds a good amount of weight to the device percentage wise. I found myself taking the mini out of its case to use, and just keeping it protected when on the go.
Effectively addressing my chief issues with the original iPad mini, the new mini is substantially faster and comes with a significantly better display. The display itself needs no real explanation. The first generation iPad mini featured a x display, which was passable but not ideal. The rest of the chassis looks otherwise identical to the original mini.
Apple likes to keep its mobile designs around for at least two generations, and the mini is no exception. By no means is this a complaint however. The Apple iPad Mini Retina is equipped with a The Acer W3 25 Wh is the only device with a larger battery. The Californian company chose this large battery to compensate for the Retina display's higher energy consumption rate , though it also adds to the device's weight and thickness. The tablet's battery run times turn out to be very good indeed -- the device surpasses its competitors in all areas. The Nexus 7's measured maximum run time 44 hours cannot be compared to our review device, as we used a different testing method.
While the Google tablet was simply turned on and left in idle mode with all communication modules turned off and the display brightness set to minimum, the iPad Mini ran a browser script with activated WLAN that simulated reading a book. At almost 20 hours , the Apple device's results are very good. Under full load and with every power-hungry module activated, the Mini still lasted a respectable 3 hours and 41 minutes.
Our solution to this problem was to perform the test manually. We surfed the Internet for an hour and then projected the final run time to be over nine hours -- a good result. Here the Apple tablet ran a good ten hours. All in all, the iPad Mini does very well here, but it cannot quite match its big brother's battery life.
However, it does not quite deserve a place on the podium. The Retina display is an excellent new feature, but its limited color space coverage and poor color accuracy are shortcomings for a premium class device. Considering how well the iPad Air did here, we expected more.
The tablet's slightly thicker build and heavier weight are not the end of the world and are hardly noticeable in day-to-day use. The tablet's higher price compared to its predecessor is unfortunate for customers. Still, the new iPad Mini is the best device in the 7-to-8 inch class. Its excellent manufacturing quality and lightning-quick performance are very appealing. Its battery life is also very good.
If you like to watch films on your tablet, though, you might be disappointed, as the aspect ratio forces the device to display thick black bars to keep the image in its original format. In summary, the new iPad Mini is a great device, and if you are looking to buy a tablet, we absolutely recommend taking a look at it.
Such a high resolution display is unique in a device of this size, and subjectively it's a very attractive feature. Compared to its big brother, Apple massively reduced the color space coverage on their miniature tablet. This makes no sense to us. The new version of the little iPad now has a Retina display, but it is also thicker than its predecessor.
Apple also bestowed their bit A7 processor on the little tyke, so it is on equal footing with its big brother. Or is it Tablet Apple. The display is protected by a glass plate. The aluminum unibody is exquisitely manufactured and feels good in your hands.
