She has the power to invite mortal souls to death, and those souls who perish this way wind up in Hakugyokurou rather than Heaven or Hell. Though it might seem dangerous for such a whimsical, seemingly impulsive personality to wield such a terrible power, Yuyuko appears to have a strong sense of responsibility regarding her power, and never uses it recklessly or out of spite, nor does she use it as a weapon.
Ironically, it was this power that drove her to kill herself in the first place. Humans fear Yuyuko because of her fearsome power and a general fear of the supernatural, but she is very cheerful and friendly. Unlike many ghosts, she resembles a living human, and her playful, good-humored personality, otherworldly beauty, and courtesan charm can have a disarming effect.
She often makes bizarre and apparently nonsensical remarks and sometimes seems to overlook the obvious, leading to her characterization as an airhead or a ditz. However, at other times, she will reveal an extremely cunning and perceptive side and will also sometimes display an extraordinary level of knowledge.
She seems to never take anything too seriously, though, and she loves to tease her straight-laced and eager-to-please assistant, Youmu, who is her opposite in many ways. Probably originating from the term "hungry ghost", she is also known for her incredible appetite and seems to have a food-related metaphor for any situation. Yuyuko is truly "dead and loving it.
During the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom, she enlisted Youmu to find a way to make the tree bloom to resurrect the corpse buried beneath it, apparently unaware that it was her own body. Forced to abandon her plan, as it would only result in her own destruction and the unleashing of the Saigyou Ayakashi's terror once again, she resigned herself to continuing her previous existence. During Ten Desires, the heroine investigates in Hakugyokurou because they suspect that Yuyuko is not taking care of the spirits properly.
But Yuyuko guides the heroine to the Graveyard behind the Myouren Temple. Long ago, there was a divinely talented poet in Gensokyo. He loved nature and spent most of his time traveling. When he became aware that the hour of his death drew near, he chose to begin his eternal rest under the most beautiful cherry tree he could find..
That cherry tree has grown even more beautiful since then, charming many people into resting in peace beneath its blossoms. The tree with the mortuary charm developed the powers of a youkai after a while. In the garden of the Saigyouji clan, there exists a youkaicherry blossom with a story behind it; it is called the Saigyou Ayakashi. For as long as Yuyuko had been there, this cherry tree has never bloomed, even in spring.
One day, while browsing through the library as usual, Yuyuko found an old record. It looked so old that it was practically ageless; within it, the following was written So that her soul may rest in peace within the Hakugyokurou, I will seal the cherry blossoms, and make it the barrier. My wish Yuyuko had read that breaking the seal on the Saigyou Ayakashi, making it bloom fully, would cause someone to be resurrected; she started gathering spring's essence out of curiosity.
Basically, almost everything in the netherworld exists as ghosts with no physical body. It is for that reason that she wondered about the corpse lying under the Saigyou Ayakashi with great interest, going as far as to consider breaking the seal. Her ability only enables her to bring death. Bringing life to something already dead would be a first. Thanks to an all-out effort put forth by Youmu, the gardener, every cherry blossom bloomed perfectly; every cherry blossom except for the Saigyou Ayakashi, which still bordered on blooming.
By that point, Gensokyo's spring had almost been completely drained. Perhaps it was because of her carefree afterlife, or maybe the record had aged beyond recognition, but Yuyuko ultimately failed to realize that the girl who was written about in the record In the beginning, Yuyuko was only able to control some dead spirits. Unconsciously, that power grew stronger, eventually becoming the ability to invoke death.
The downside is the startup, but this is a really good move anyway. Similar to 5C, but fires at a larger downward arc. Note that the charged version of this attack places the wisps in a different position, instead making a denser, more vertical wall-like pattern, instead of a horizontal line. Shoots a five-branched laser beam horizontally. Wallslams on hit.
Highjump cancelable as soon as laser becomes active. Each laser line has its own hitbox, so this move will do very low damage if the opponent is caught at the edges. Does 2 hits. Mostly used after 6C and 6As that wallbounce during combos. A powered up version of Yuyuko's beam move. Unable to be fired in the air, and it covers less area than he default, but it fires much faster. The beam also releases multiple butterfly bullets as it travels. Yuyuko throws out some wisps in an arc in front of her that fall to the ground.
Upon touching the ground, these wisps will jump out of the ground at an arc. Upon touching the ground again, they will jump out one more time before disappearing. They are quite dense and will cancel out most other projectiles. Can be high jump canceled before the wisps touch the ground.
Powering up this card increases the amount of wisps and the amount of times the wisps will jump out of the ground. Commonly known as the "fanspin". Yuyuko rushes forwards then does a diagonal twirl with a fan in both hands, with large butterflies fluttering about.
Yuyuko will begin the spin as soon as she reaches her opponent, or until a certain distance depending on the version used at which she will attack anyways. Pretty good move in combos or out in the open to graze through bullets or cancel your own bullets. The high reach of it makes it useful against chickenblocking opponents. The skill raises Yuyuko slightly off the ground, making her invulnerable to some low attacks. Note that B version has shorter startup and recovery than the C version, at 16F versus 23F.
The frame advantage of the B version on block is F, while the C version is F on block. After level 1, startup decreases by 4F for both versions, but recovery remains the same. Yuyuko flips backwards. Acts as a reversal. The move is invulnerable from the first frame up until the active frames occur. The hitbox can also hit outstretched limbs from an opponent's attack, or attack opponents chasing her. Although more threatening as a reversal when Yuyuko's back is to the corner, it is also much easier to punish.
Very high damage on counter hit. Yuyuko twirls where she stands then swings her fan upwards, moving forward a bit and releasing a large pink slash in front that reaches high. As it hits the opponent upwards, it provides longer window for okizeme.
B version comes out quicker than C, but C is fully invulnerable while Yuyuko spins. C version has slow startup, making it easy to react to, and is somewhat unsafe on block. Hitbox size increases at level 2 and 4. Untechable time increases at level 2. Yuyuko fires harmless wisps.
Onces the wisps connect with the ceiling or a wall they will convert into three butterflies per wisp. The butterflies will automatically target the opponent's position to some degree. A staple move of Yuyuko's bullet cover. Sends a single harmless wisp diagonally upforwards. Once the wisp connects with the ceiling or a wall it will convert into three multicolored light spears that leave behind a laser trail.
The lasers will have a fix trajectory. The C version shoots slightly further than the B version, and at a different angle. In general, this skill lacks utility outside of combos and zoning in certain matchups, but it is perfectly usable. Creates a spiral of dots that extend forward past Yuyuko and linger for a while. After a delay they begin to explode in rapid succession from first to last, becoming an intractable bullet.
Each dot will deal 0. For Oki, Yuyuko can force the opponents to block the explosions and easily guard crush with the following mixup. However, it is very limited in combo-ability due to the startup and delayed activation. A very powerful setplay tool is used properly. Yuyuko creates a ring of wisps that lingers on screen for a bit. C version juggles upwards on hit, and combos into itself in the corner.
Yuyuko pauses briefly before extending her hand and creating a point of light that can be controlled as long as the button used to start the skill is held. Soon after, a set of small ghosts appear that will chase the light around. These ghosts are quite dense bullets and will cancel most other projectiles, however Yuyuko cannot move while she's controlling the light.
The wisps will disappear soon after Yuyuko stops controlling the light. Leveling up increases the duration of the wisps. Yuyuko leaps in the air. If she comes into contact with an opponent she will grab them, dealing damage and fully limiting. This move will only hit an airborne opponent, but is completely unblockable, making it very effective against chickenblocking and HJ8 escapes.
This move will not hit an opponent who is in blockstun, but it can be combo'd into. Every hit from this move will make a tiny wisp appear, which will attempt to hit the opponent as they get up from the ground if they were knocked down by this move. The wisps are cumulative up to a maximum of 8. Gifts to the Deceased can be used again while the wisps are still attacking, but the ones that have already attacked before the opponent hits the ground again will no longer attack afterwards.
The wisps are blockable and grazeable when they're active. Spews out a bunch of wisps that travel in horizontal waves at random heights. Can be used in the air. Quick activation and low cost make this a great card for pressure. Cancel unsafe attacks not 66C into this on block in corner only as it's unsafe midscreen. Deals a 1. Creates two rings of butterflies that expand outwards.
Each ring is two layers thick and the butterflies in each layer orbit in a circular fashion in the ring. Really good move in combos or even as a reversal, does decent damage. Yuyuko is not invincible for its the entire duration, however, and an opponent who blocks this can Border Escape towards Yuyuko and punish when the spellcard ends.
Shoots out a tiny wisp that travels horizontally. If it hits the opponent it will "poison" the opponent and drain their life slowly. As of 1. Releases a ring of harmless wisps that expand outwards until they touch the ceiling or a wall. Once the wisps touch a wall, they convert into a group of butterflies that targets the opponent to some degree.
These butterflies and wisps will not disappear if Yuyuko is hit, but the butterflies can still be destroyed by projectiles. Basically a super version of her d This card is a decent way for Yuyuko to gain momentum as it has some invincibility frames at the start, and if your opponent attacks Yuyuko immediately after the screen will zoom such that they will get comboed by the butterflies. Creates an enormous ring of wisps around the stage, centered on the opponent's location upon creation.
The ring will slowly contract until it becomes small enough to hit the opponent. However, if the opponent moves the ring's center will not track the opponent. Does a ridiculous amount of spirit damage and can easily lead to a guard crush by having Yuyuko tack on more bullets. The ring will also destroy any destroyable opponent projectile. High density and large size make this a great tool for controlling the field, and by forcing the opponent to graze, opening melee opportunities.
Best used when the opponent is in the air and has burned both flights, leaving them free to be guard crushed. This, however, assumes they are high enough so that landing and jumping again isn't an option. Lasers spring up from the ground in an upwards fan-like pattern, and four waves of butterflies fly up one after another.
Does a very good amount of spirit damage on airblock, and more importantly drains the opponent's spirit rapidly should they try to graze it, making it ideal to use against airborne opponents who are low on spirit. When blocked on ground, however, this move drains less than one orb, and is not safe when blocked.
The first use is a bit mediocre, but it quickly becomes much more powerful, literally doubling in damage on its 4th use. Either use 4 of these or none at all. Powered up version of her Ghastly Dream butterfly super. Creates more rings that expand further outwards and does a lot more damage.
Really useful card to have, use it on hit, block, reversal, whatever. Note that the position that you hit with using this move is important as well: too close and the second ring will whiff doing much less damage. Powered up version of the poison card. This version doesn't steadily drain life though. Instead, when the opponent is hit, they are surrounded by a group of wisps that disappear one at a time.
When all the wisps vanish, which takes 6 seconds, a huge explosion engulfs the opponent and deals a lot of damage. The explosion cannot be grazed or blocked, but the wisps will disappear if Yuyuko is hit. Note that the explosion can be avoided with backdash invincibility, invincible spellcards and even some skillcards or character specific mechanics, so it is best to get opponents blocking before the explosion activates. Notice, that every character has spellcard or skill, that can escape from damage.
Example: [1] and [2]. Creates a fan behind Yuyuko, and then after a delay Yuyuko will begin to pelt the opponent with a stream of horizontal moving laser lances. Basically a super version of Yuyuko's laser alt skillcard. Can be combo'd into from her Dial-A for over 4k dmg from anywhere on screen except in the corner. Creates a glow below the opponent that spews out a stream of wisps that travel in waves vertically upwards.
This move is pretty good in combos or on block, as it pins the opponent down while they block the wisps. Hard to combo into though, and it stops if Yuyuko is knocked down. Generally not worth the cost, as Yuyuko has much more useful cards at lower cost. Yuyuko twirls where she stands, and after a bit more than a second, swings her fan and releases a gigantic pink slash similar to her alt , covering a huge area in front of her, reaching very high.
This spellcard is a high-hitting melee attack and cannot be blocked or grazed in the air, but can be blocked high on the ground, dealing massive chip damage, but no spirit damage unless blocked low. Does dmg on hit. Useful against chickenblocking and ceiling hugging, but the long startup limits its usability.
Combos from her d wisp rings, but the high proration of it mitigates the damage a lot. Invincible from startup until the fourth hit, making it a great counter against other spellcards. Japanese Yuyuko wiki. From Touhou Hisoutensoku. Yuyuko Saigyouji. A downward chop with a large butterfly.
Charged version spellcard cancelable only. A diagonally downward wisp attack. Hits 4 times total with 5F hitstop. Uncharged fires 15 bullets. Charged version fires B Version: Lasers are fired closer together. C Version: Lasers are fired in a wide spread. Lv Damage increases.
