Dear Untitled : Before I Turn was established in — Were there any acts by the band members prior to this, or was this the first go at things? Were you already thinking into the concept album idea prior to formation? Alex Anglis : The name Before I Turn pretty much just derives from an interest I have in stories that involve someone or something turning into something completely different.
Alex : You are absolutely right, we have 2 albums out, and 1 EP that. Is there an underlying theme between them as to what draws you to each, or is it a piece-meal sort of inspiration? Buster Odeholm from HLB has always had a huge influence on me with his writing.
Veil of Maya I believe always had the best chugs, Shokran has a great atmospheric element, and Alesana conceptually and lyrically has had the absolute biggest impact on my lyrical content, more than words can describe. So mix it all together and you get Before I Turn. Each song is about its own specific story, but its not necessarily one song leads to the next, leads to the next like Claustrophobic.
Essentially each song on that album is about something personal or about a story from a video game, or literature. For instance the concepts range from A Series of Unfortunate Events my favorite book series , or my favorite video game, Skyrim. The list continues. As for Claustrophobic it is the first chapter of a concept we have made about a mentally ill man who kills his mother, and the aftermath of what his mind does to try to justify the situation.
Dear Untitled : Who handles the writing and creation of this story? Is it an all-band involved thing, or is it mainly a single individual on the writing and everyone jumps on board, or both? But eventually we just kept writing and it sounded great so we went with it, and now we are all super into it.
We always pretty much close with Stella because that is probably our most well known song live. I can tell you we are all sick of playing it lol but we play it anyways and its always a good time with the crowd. And how about that concept tour with INK and Alesana, huh? Before I Turn : You know, we thought we were done for a bit to focus on the album, but if opportunities present themselves that are fun then we will take it.
However, because we are now self-producing we plan on taking a LONG time at going over each song, making revisions, doing rigorous post production to make sure each song is something that we deem to be a masterpiece.
Hopefully a reality soon I would love nothing more than to tour with my all time favorite band Alesana and one of my latest favorite bands, INK. Congrats btw! Before I Turn : So what I can say is that the story will continue. Claustrophobic ends with a cliff hanger so it was absolutely our intention to make it that way so that we can do a follow up. As for details about what the follow up entails, I cannot say.
But late this year we will start revealing things and hopefully will even drop the first single. As for the female guest vocalist spot. She was super fun to work with and gave us a lot of extra vocal takes that we can lace throughout the song to add to the beauty and the atmosphere. The art is the foundational narrative sprinkled throughout. Once you grasp the haunting concept story, the saga falls into line and things click.
A full spectrum of vocals, styles, and empathy runs free — breathtaking in these sacred moments. Every intentional respite to catch your breath, every clean riff to cling to, every harsh vocal to berate — this album speak volumes. Gripping, right? Skip to content. Review: When you consider things that you love about a specific artist, what comes to mind first?
