Every single case that I have witnessed of augmenting performance with subs and extra tweeters has been down to the cabinet design, a poor crossover or inappropriate choice of Tannoy driver.
You simply wont need these if going the Gold 15 or HPD 12 or 15 route with an appropriate cabinet design. A sorted design using a 12 inch HPD will run rings round most of the modern Prestige series. Best of luck with the project though and I hope it works out for you. Actually I think I found interim solution. I forgot that I restored a pair of Leak TL last year and after listening to them with Living Voice Avatars for a while I decided that they are rather poor sounding and put them in the storage with intention to sell that "crap" After last post I went to the basement and hauled them to the bedroom with Tannoys and VOILA a beautiful harmonies emerged and system started to breath like a spring draft.
After my Living Voice adventure still have them I like particle board cabs and the one from leak is pretty solid with bitumen pads. I made plywood front baffle. As to augmenting with subs and tweeters I will see. American rooms are made from drywall panels and wooden frame with suspended wooden floors and suck the bass like a sponge.
What a nice outcome! Richard C. Well, I can agree or even disagree Tannoy also made models with DC driver augmented with bass and supertweeter-usually the expensive ones. If the bass rolls off at Hz and is rather "enthusiastic quality " and treble dies at khz there is nothing wrong with adding adjacent channels. How will you find the shortcomings elsewhere?? To me 10" DC driver is the least compromised design , since it still can be sensibly crossed to small horn tweeter.
It's a personal preference. Most of vintage gear in original or even restored state is a horrible junk with with few magnificent advantages. We usually put up with that crap for those few light spots and do not rip it trough completely because it will loose all the "collectible" value. Most of American houses are built fast and cheaply ,and even expensive ones have multitude of problems from the day one but it's not the topic of the thread Best Regards, L PS. Personally, I think that the pick of the bunch is the 12 inch HPD and this is always the one I recommend for the best compromise between scale, bass extension, good clarity and speed.
Nice to know someone agrees with me on that! In a properly built and tuned L box, magic. RustyB , Aug 3, Thanks Rusty , good to know. Which amps are good match? Be aware that although I tend to listen mainly to classical these days , I do bang my head from time to time when nobody is home and intake of Mojito exceeds certain level I listened to them with a humble Leak Stereo Did the job in a smallish room. I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there. This is just delete by another name. It's the only Tannoy crossover I'm not able to Google.
Does anyone have a diagram? TIA , L. I may be able to help. To reduce the "honk" or horn resonance output, follow this from the positive rail to ground return with a notch filter comprising 5. Some people prefer to use a variable resistor here, so you could experiment with a variable 50R resistor or try out a handful starting from 10R and going to 50R.
This will affect notch depth. For the caps, Solens would be perfectly adequate. For the HF resistors, use minimum 7 watt metox or wirewound, but I tend to over-rate these and use minimum 12watt. The HF doesn't take an awful lot of current at the end of the day. However, the addition of a notch filter helps smooth out response at around 3KHz. The summed acoustic crossover point from this design is approximately at 1KHz.
Hope this helps. Pac1 , Aug 1, On the LF crossover output pins it reads 1. It looks like its a step down transformer to match 16 Ohm amp output to 2. I also have one Monitor gold 10" with crossover. I tried to swap gold with red keeping RED crossover -It doesn't work very well.
Red is quite a bit more efficient. All and all at this point I consider Tannoy 10 RED with original crossover to sound dated , rather hard and splashy in lower treble with short murky decay signature of old electrolytic caps I guess , overblown bass 60L closed box may be related to matching transformer-it disappears with Gold crossover and becomes rather deficient.
I will spend some time tweaking , so far the results are not worth the expenses I paid current rate for REDS. I don't hear this vivid alnico tone either. Rgrds, L. I probably expected too much from the driver based on all the internet noise. It is not bad sounding just not quite stellar they make it to be with original crossover. I can measure with RLC meter on hf output steps between 12 and 18 mH depends on switch position.
Since 10" driver was the latest development of RED series maybe they introduced stepped inductor as well. I didn't purchase it for all round use. I was going to augment it with dual subwoofer section and ribbon tweeter have decent alnico db units Just first need to find that promised Tannoy "magic" to warrant further efforts. You can get that Tannoy "magic" without recourse to subs or supertweeters. Every single case that I have witnessed of augmenting performance with subs and extra tweeters has been down to the cabinet design, a poor crossover or inappropriate choice of Tannoy driver.
