At the Gryphon Music Academy we believe in teaching players of all levels to not just play the instrument, but to think about the entire scope of the instrument in the context of music.

Studio mixers | In a home studio setting, this would be an essential item if you want a two-in-one solution to recording and multi-tracking. In a home studio setup, this will be ideal for larger spaces with a bigger requirement in terms of channel inputs. Since the decibel represents a relative measurement, and not a unit itself, the meters must be referenced to a nominal level. Which one would you prefer to buy? Some of the more important functional sections are subdivided into subsections. To obtain a good gain structure, engineers usually raise the gain as high as they can before studio mixers clipping results; this helps to provide the best signal to noise ratio. The types of inputs that can be plugged into a mixer depend on the intended purpose of the mixer. |

The constant changing out of jack leads is enough to harsh any buzz in a home studio. Fear not, because the best home studio mixers here may be just the thing you need to keep your creative flow intact. Here we will run through a selection of analogue and digital mixers and mixing desks to ensure you can record multiple sources at once.
Some favour traditional simplicity, while others incorporate ingenious tricks to unlock the full potential of your gear. Choosing the best home studio mixer or mixing desk is a challenge, not least because they come in all different shapes and sizes. What works for a solo artist looking to record a studio microphone and electric guitar will likely not fit the bill for more expansive setups. The mic preamps sound great for the price, and the USB connectivity means it will have a good few years in it yet.
Special mention must also go to the Rode RodeCaster Pro; while podcasting itself is still relatively niche, in the RodeCaster Pro there is a specialist mixing desk which offers up a few neat tricks specifically for those users.
The GSPre preamps are super quiet and have bags of headroom, and all mic inputs include a Hz low cut filter alongside 3 band fixed frequency EQ. USB operation is also sensible, with 3 routing configurations.
Finally, an onboard FX send and processor rounds things off. There are five level knobs four input and one output and the physical output is on a single mini jack. The four input knobs blend the 9 input sources to one stereo mix. You can even prop up your tablet or phone in the groove.
Overall it provides a great miniature option for the mobile producer. There are 4 mixer strips 3 mono and 1 stereo and all include 3 band EQ, 2 auxiliary sends and pan. Finishing off this very retro styled mixer are wooden end panels. In the Zoom LiveTrak L, there is a solution.
This input digital mixer combines the best of both worlds. As a pure mixer, you can record up to 12 sources at the same time with complete control over levels, panning, effects and routing. This can then be output either as one summary source, or as individual tracks to a computer over USB for editing and post-production.
Alternatively, the LiveTrak L also acts as a self-contained multitrack recorder, with the ability to record, mix and master full tracks which can be exported via SD card. For bands on a budget, the Zoom LiveTrak L is a pretty compelling proposition. You get 16 inputs in total arranged as 8 mono and 4 stereo channel strips. The mono channels get 3-band EQ with swept mid, while the stereo channels have 4-band fixed frequency EQ. All channel strips can route to the 2 stereo group buses the pan pot allows you to blend between them as well as main the stereo mix bus, and the first 8 channels also include a post fader direct out, which is available on the back panel.
The VLZ4 is a traditional analogue desk with no DAW interfacing, but delivers a clean signal path, solid Mackie build quality and is ideal for recording small groups. Channel LED metering complements the screen driven parameter visuals, and rounding things off are 8 effects slots, 8 DCA groups, input expandability via the two AES50 connectors and flexible routing via the physical outputs and monitoring.
All told the X32 Producer is a supremely powerful tool at an excellent price. Quality analogue design, Soundcraft heritage EQ and familiar layout form the basis of this surprisingly affordable recording desk. You get 22 inputs arranged as 14 mono and 4 stereo channel strips. Four of the inputs can also handle Hi-Z instruments. There are 5 auxiliaries and dual engine Lexicon effects hardwired to Auxes 4 and 5.
Meanwhile channel routing incorporates 2 stereo buses plus the stereo mix output. Long throw mm faders help if feel like a professional desk, and overall the Signature 22 MTK is ideal for tracking multiple mic set ups such as bands. Output routing is handled in a similar way. The Remote Layer allows you to control external DAWs using the console as a remote surface, and you can also use your computer to control many of the 01V96i's features once you've installed the included Studio Manager software.
Clean, great-sounding audio capability, flexible routing and high-quality internal effects mean the 01V96i remains a great performer. Read the full Yamaha 01V96i review. Professional mixing desks can be seriously expensive, but the ASP offers professional level analogue mixing plus big console workflow in a compact and more affordable format.
This is via a traditional large and small fader configuration which can be flipped if required. The centre section includes facility for 4 loudspeaker outputs, 2 cue sends, 1 studio foldback send, 4 stereo inputs, oscillator, talkback alongside various output trim pots.
There are also subgroup faders for the first 8 routing groups, and a traditional VCA mix bus compressor. All told the ASP is an extremely elegant analogue desk that is ideal for recording. To show that not every home studio recording setup involves music, we present to you the Rode RodeCaster Pro.
Podcasting is, as we know, an ever-growing area of creativity, yet its technical needs often overlap with the needs of music and audio production. It does everything you need it to do, be it recording a live band, rehearsals, or even just for doing some solo home recording, this mixer will do everything while still being very easy to use and intuitive. The quality of these preamps is very good, providing you with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio and good headroom.
It also comes with 6 aux outputs which can be used to create headphone mixes, or for live monitoring, as well as a headphone output. It even has an Auto-Mix feature that can manage fully automated mixes with up to 16 live microphones. However, this feature is not really intended for mixing live music, but rather conferences. Additionally, I wrote a post about the best wireless mixers that you can check out here.
The Signature MTK 12 and 22 series from Soundcraft are analog mixers that also come with onboard effects and USB multi-track recording and playback capabilities, and they both allow for 12 or 22 multi-track recording respectively. It is important to make the distinction between the MTK series and the regular Series;. The MTK series are fantastic for anyone who is building a home studio and wants a good Mixer with loads of inputs and extra features. The Ghost preamps featured on these consoles are considered top of the line and are of extremely high quality, giving you a lot of headroom, wide dynamic range and good signal to noise ratio.
These Mixers feature the Sapphyre Asymmetric EQ, which has two separate mid-bands, and offer Hi-Z inputs for electric guitars and basses. Additionally, they come loaded with studio-quality effects from Lexicon like Reverb, Delay, Chorus, Modulation and other effects and DBX limiters on the input channels, as well as a 48v Phantom Power control, which is global, and also a High-Pass filter for all mono inputs.
However, what I like the most about these mixers is that they are designed to be used for Hybrid mixing, which means that once you have all the tracks setup in your DAW, you can use the Mixer to mix them, add effects, etc. The Soundcraft Signature MTK 12 and 22 Series are simple and easy to use, the recording quality is extremely good and they will serve you well either for live performances or for your home studio.
Lastly, and this will probably excite you about this mixer, it allows you to control the DAW with it, thanks to having motorized faders. Not only that but it comes with a router directly built-in, which allows you to connect up to 20 simultaneous devices. All in all, I think that the Mackie DL16S is a great mixer that works great both in live- and home studio scenarios. The Tascam Model 12, 16 and 24 are true hybrid mixers that have all the controls an analog console has to offer, as well as some extra digital features.
Also, those two channels have an extra insert on the front. It allows you to assign the input of your choice, like the live incoming signal, the return from a DAW channel or the return from the internal multitrack recorder to each channel for EQ, processing, etc.
Additionally, they come with a 3-band EQ with Sweepable mids, plus a low-cut on those same channels. On the rest of them you only get a regular 3-band EQ plus the low-cut. A stereo 7-band graphic EQ can be additionally applied to the main mix or monitors output, which lets you shape your mixes to your liking and prevent feedback. The Tascam Model 12, 16 and 24 series are some of the best mixers you could get for your home studio, especially the Model 12 thanks to its built-in DAW control mode.
This mixer is both great for large recording studios as well as home studios, but where it excels at is live performances, because you can setup the mixer on the stage and control it from anywhere in the venue, not having to worry about the cables. If you are just building a small home studio, then I honestly believe that the Mackie DL32R is a bit overkill since you probably will never take advantage of the 32 channels.
Learn more about the Mackie DL32R here :. The StudioLive Series are the latest digital Presonus mixers and they range from 16 channels all the way up to These mixers are capable of multitrack recording and also feature the DAW control mode, which turns the mixers into a control surface for your DAW. The Fat Channel features a touch screen and allows you to access different types of compressors, EQs, etc. This gives you a lot of options and a simple and fast workflow, plus it also provides a highpass filter on every channel and aux bus and polarity invert for each input channel.
When recording, you can choose to record the audio with the effects you add to them or the RAW files, if you want to do all the processing in the box.
